Cocos Islands Holidays Vacations
Few small islands in the ocean and water all around, that is Cocos Islands, also called as Keeling Islands. There are two atolls and twenty-seven coral islands in the group. The islands are located in the middle of Indian Ocean.
It is 2750 km northwest of Perth. Its closest neighbour is Christmas Island. Cocos Islands is 900 km west south-west of Christmas island. It lies in the humid tropical zone.
The people who came first here were mostly Malay. People of Papuan, Chinese and Indian descent came at same time. There were a few Africans also with them. The people came here were from Bali, Celebes, Timor, Sumatra, Malacca, Penang etc. |
People of that island have been isolated from the main lands since a very long time. It has added a very special feature in their culture. Today most of Cocos speak malay dialect. Main focus of the population is Islamic religion but certain foods, musical things and dances have a western flavour. It is a territory of Australia now.
The climate of cocos Islands is sub tropical. Cyclones occur in the early two- three months of the year. The climate is pleasant for about nine months of the year with moderate rainfall. So it is better to visit to cocos Islands in the later part of the year. There are flights from International Airport of Perth twice in a week, which is Monday and Friday.
Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a nature’s paradise. It is a water lover's paradise too. There is natural beauty untouched. You can do fishing around the wonderful coral atoll. If diving is your passion it is the best place for you. You can enjoy snorkeling or island hopping too.The famous Pulu Keeling National Park is there. Park's habitats are very sensitive to disturbances by human being. Access to the Park can be unsafe.
Public access is permitted in the company of Parks Australia staff. It is permitted with licensed tour operators too. If you like festivals and events, then the cocos are good hosts. Besides Traditional festivals, they host a number of events. One of the events is annual Lagoon swimming event.
In this event competitors swim from Home Island to West Island across the lagoon. It must be a very wonderful experience for you. The event ends with prize distribution ceremony and dinner. Cocos Olympics and Ardmona cup are another popular events.
