Republic of the Marshall Island, situated in Central Pacific and 1500miles East of Guam, has a population of only 65000. There is nothing much to learn regarding the history of this country. Alonso de Salazar, a Spanish explorer, was the first European to discover this land way back in 1526 but it was named after the British captain John Marshall in 1788.
A leading German trading company settled here in 1885 and then the Japanese conquered this island in the World War l. United States captured this island in 1944. US soldiers tested 66 nuclear weapons here between 1946 and 1958. On March 2007 the government of this island declared an emergency after a long drought. |
This country is made of twenty-nine atolls and five isolated lands. Majuro atoll is the capital of this state. Some of the popular destinations of this place are Majuro, Roi-Namur, Kwajalein, Ebon, Bikini & Ebeye. Majuro is a great place of interest and there are many places to see here. Every place has its own charm and offerings. This particular country doesn’t have a huge political or historical significance in the world map still it is there with her own characteristics.
The economy of this country is hugely dependent upon the growth of coconuts, tomatoes, melons and breadfruit. This country is famous for coconut trees and coconut oil. Bikini or Pikinni Island is the largest island of the Bikini atoll. The nuclear bomb tests done by the US soldiers made this place famous. There is a high ratio of radioactivity which surrounds this place due to those tests and in the late 1960’s some local people were removed from this place for the sake of their health.
Bikini lagoon is a great thing to watch and some of land structure of this place is really a treat for the eyes. Bokak atoll is also a beautiful piece of land. Air service stations and shipping stations of Majuro is a great place to visit. Majuro and Kwajalein are the transportation hubs of the Marshall Island. Various types of vehicle for transportation can be found in these two places. Even today one can get a old time flavor of various military activities in this island.
Kwajalein has a very restricted military status. Uliga is the main business district of Majura and all sorts of business transactions have been made from Uliga. Toke atoll is another very small island of Marshall Island.
Some of the German trade company used to operate their tradings from Ujelang atoll in the early parts of 1980s.The weather remains hot, humid and wet between May and November. The typhoons also give occasional visits to this place.
Many Pacific typhoons actually start from the Marshall Island and thus the weather of this country is not fascinating. There are some routes to go to the Marshall Island from Australia, Guam and other places like Papua New Guinea.
Lastly it can be said that this piece of land, surrounded by blue water has certain things which has given it a unique touch and any visitor will enjoy every part of his journey through this land. |
