Myanmar Holidays Vacations

And you thought Myanmar was all about the military junta and political unrest? No way! Myanmar is God’s own country rather well endowed with historical, cultural, and natural resources. Pristine beaches which render the experience of a setting sun magical and set off the psychedelic colors of the sea waters so that they appear almost jewel-like, make even the timid traveler forget the ravages of war.

There are over 2,000 kilometers of unspoiled coastline and hundreds of picturesque islands, not to mention the gorgeous scenery all the way.The 40th largest country in the world, it is sandwiched between India and Bangladesh. Much of the country’s population resides in the Ayeyarwady Valley along the river by the same name, also Myanmar’s longest river.
Myanmar is a major draw with tourists for its great traditions, art, history and culture. The ancient blacksmith craft of the country, floral sculptures, and its famous bronze casting should not be missed when you are in the country. Also, while in Myanmar, don’t miss its amazing puppetry display. Part of a very ancient Myanmar tradition, the human-sized puppets are sculpted according to set rules and standards.

In a country steeped in history, certain sights are absolute ‘must sees’. You could commence your quest with Bagan, not far from the city of Yangon. A city of grand temples and splendiferous ruins, its shrines, stupas, and pagodas quite take the eye. You could travel by surface transport to get there or simply take a cruise along the Ayeyarwady River while drinking in the lovely sights that greet you along the way. If you happen to be stationed in Yangon, you could travel a bit up north to visit the last capital of the Burmese monarch, Mandalay.

Traveling by boat is more rewarding than traveling by road there. Although much of the city is ruined, including the enormous wooden palace (it got burned down in World War II) it’s still a great city to visit mainly because of its pagodas and temples. Yangon, the country’s capital, itself is a major tourist attraction and its crowning glory – the Shwedagon Pagoda which stands high and mighty over Singuttara Hill; it is an architectural wonder with its glittering jewels and shimmering gold plates.

The people of Yangon are friendly and hospitable and will make you feel at home when you go out on a stroll on its wide, tree-lined boulevards. So when is it the best time to visit the country? Experienced travelers opine that the months between November and February to be the best ones. Have fun and travel safe!
