Wake Island Holidays Vacations
Wake Island is an approximately 20 kilometers long island towards the North of Pacific Ocean. Situated in between Honolulu and Guam, this island is a unincorporated territory of the United States of America. In October 1568 a Spanish explorer explored this with his two ships but it was named after the Captain William Wake, the master of British trading.
The Battle of Wake Island took place between America and the Japanese in the World War ll. As this is a very small island, it is possible for a person to cover the entire island on foot.
While traveling, it is advised that a traveler should be aware of the sharp coral stones, and he must wear hard shoes. |
The beautiful little beaches and the lagoons are the most interesting things to watch here. Wake Island is an excellent example of a typical Tropical island. 98Rock is probably the most famous place of this island. It was built in the memory of 98 U.S. soldiers who were brutally blind-folded and killed by the Japanese on 5th October 1943.
Thus this little island has become a place having great historical significance. Even today, one can see the large piece of coral rock near the mass grave of those soldiers. The original inscription on that rock is still there. There are also several other memorials in memory of other American soldiers.
This is not a big island like Samoa or Fiji so there is no such great amount of hotels or accommodations in the Wake Island. People do not get the opportunity to visit this island frequently as it is no longer open for the common visitors. Another downside of this island is that it does not have a proper navigable harbor. For all these reasons this island has not become a popular tourist spot.
Not only it has a great historical value, but it has all the ingredients to become a paradise for the travelers, but sadly it could not become so.If a traveler goes he can take shelter in the barracks and there are some other VIP quarters.
Fishes of this island in general are very friendly but those coral reefs are very sharp which can harm a person. The way towards the Wake Island is not at all easy as there is no direct transportation system.
One can go there from Guam or from the Midway. The temperature of this island remains hot all through the year in summer the temperature reaches 25-30 degree centigrade. Typhoons can be seen in this island for a brief time. |
